An amazing photographer friend of mine, Katalin Hidegh, has become a great source of inspiration for me. Her work, depicts her observation of people and the world in which they exist. She has a great sense of composition and her story telling skill is serene and exploratory. So i decided to ask her a few questions about her beginnings and her visual process.
How did you arrive to photography?
I always been a creative person and appreciated art. I used to take photos with my phone like everyone but I didn’t get into real photography until two years ago when I started to travel around in Asia. It inspired me a lot and motivated me to learn to being able capture it in the way I see it. I met with a lots of like minded photographers during my journey and I learned a lot from them. What do you shoot with? Favorite lens?
I started on a Sony a6300 and lately a changed to Sony a7 III which I love. My favorite lens is my Sigma 24-70 f2.8Who inspires you?
My biggest inspirations are those young and talented self made photographers who developed their own unique style. I love to see how they get better and they grow along the way. What is your creative process?
I am very spontaneous when it comes to street photography and not really planning much in advance. I’m always looking for the right framing and for the right timing and to capture a picture that tells a story. For past process I use lightroom. Color grading is an important part of my process as it helps to achieve the mood I want. I’m playing around a lot until I get there where I want. I usually like the dark, moody, and cinematic look. With portraits, I like to get to know my model so I can find a style that suits them the best. I’m quite new in this field so I really enjoy experimenting with interesting and creative solutions to achieve a more unique look. Lighting and posing is an important part in it when it comes to shooting. For post processing, I only open Photoshop for doing the retouching if it’s needed, but I’m not an expert with PS. I’m doing most of the editing in Lightroom.
Explain your style?
I experimenting and like to try out different styles. But I think some things are common in all, they are all a bit weird,a bit dark, a bit mysterious, and a bit dramatic. Definitely moody. More artsy than documenting. Asian culture had a big impact on me, but I love the cinematic and the cyberpunk look too and it often shows on my pictures. What do you wish you knew early on in your photographic career?
I kinda think I’m still in an early stage and I have to learn a lot. But in the very beginning, I wish I paid more attention to the technical parts of the photography as keeping my ISO low to avoid noise or paying more attention to resolution. Looking back at early pictures it is sad to see I had the eye for it, the idea was good, the moment was right, but the settings weren’t good. I used to only post pictures on Instagram and I often didn’t even save the originals so they are completely lost or I only have them in a very bad quality. That’s a big regret now.Is Portraiture the only genre you photograph?
I started with street photography, portraits came after. But I’m really passionate about fashion photography and would like to get more into that too.How is your journalistic style of travel & street photography informing your portraiture?
I like to photograph diversity. Photographing places I always pursue to capture the hidden parts of it. I’m the type of photographer who walks on the dark alleyways not on the touristic spots. When I photograph people I want to show them in different ways too. There is a story behind every people and slice of a part of the world. I want to explore that hidden world and show it in my way.Where are you right now in your creative phase?
I’m in a state of exploration. I’m at a state when I have millions of ideas but I’m not experienced enough to being able to create everything how I imagined. It’s frustrating but also very motivating to learn and grow every day.Where are you going?
To the cover of the Vogue 😊
I have seen her progress and admire her dedication and she is one of the few people I am curious and excited to see what else her talent will create.
